a letter

I posted this on my old blog, and am now sending it out again from this blog. This time with some edits.

To the women in my life, whether you are 15 or 45 years older than me…
… if you’re a mother, encourage me. Remind me to enjoy these days, don’t flinch when my baby cries, give me nuggets of wisdom, hug me and tell me I’m doing a good job.
… don’t try to hide your wrinkles. They remind me that laughter is good medicine, and that beauty is living life to the fullest.
… pass along your famous recipe. How will it ever get famous if you don’t share it?
… show me that aging can be fun. That love can still have passion after 30 years. That your home is your castle of which you are the queen.
... tell me that love isn't easy. Don't pretend you're making it on a wish and a prayer. A little "love elbow grease" does a marriage good. Show me that sacrificing is beauty. That surrender is worship.
… hold your husband’s hand. Kiss him when everyone is looking. Laugh at his jokes, even if you’ve heard them a thousand times. I need my children to see you loving your mate even after he drives you crazy. I want to know that not all love stories have tragic or boring endings.
… don’t apologize for not “being cool.” I don’t need you to be cool. I need you to be wise.
… show me how to mend a boo-boo, how to sew on a button with no sewing needle, how to live on a tight budget, cook a meal with no ingredients, hem dress pants, tie a tie, cook a turkey, dance like Rita Hayworth, sing like Judy Garland, mystify like Audrey Hepburn and laugh when you can’t.
… don’t shy back in the face of adversity. Show me it’s worth pushing through.
… pursue your dreams, whether your 30 or 80. Remind me that life is not a dress rehearsal.
… forgive freely, give generously. This reminds me that living is not living with closed hearts and tight fists.

I am watching you, learning from you … so don’t shy back from living. I’ll be like you someday and I need to know how to do it.

  1. I'm only like three feet ahead of you on the pathway of motherhood, but...

    Taco Soup
    1 lb. ground turkey, browned
    1 can pinto beans
    1 can rotel
    1 can black beans
    1 can corn niblets
    1 packet taco seasoning

Heat all ingredients until gently boiling. Stir to keep from sticking on the bottom.

Serve with grated cheese and corn chips.

(And thanks for liking my wrinkles. Thats a load off!)
